Participant Instructions

Some Experts Discuss the Issues Facing Parents of Troubled Teens

December 2, 2000 - The Community Partnership for Youth invited a number of professional counselors, social service representatives and law enforcement officers and a member of the Huntsville City Council to discuss issues facing the parents of troubled teenagers. In particular, they were challenged to consider ways to get help for teens before they get into trouble with the law.

A computer-assisted think tank format had been arranged for the parents to brainstorm about their concerns and ways to address them. However, since no parents were available to participate, the professionals were encouraged to use the computers to generate their ideas and recommendations.

Their topics and supporting comments are presented here.

1. Help families get out of crises

one central place to go for assessment and help {#41}

help is free and accessable {#45}

a place to leave the child, no matter what the problem, until the appropriate help could be provided {#49}

have channels that actively identify families in crisis and direct them/ go with them to get help (someone gets involved with that family and stays involved) {#72}

have people available that are trained in de-escalating a crisis, assessing the actual level of crisis, and make an effective recommendation or referal {#75}

I agree, there needs to be one central location for a parent to take a child when there is an immediate crisis. Assessment needs to be done, and the appropriate action taken NOW.. {#76}

support from other families so they know they aren't alone, and empowerment of the family/parents {#77}

2. Help families get on the right track

give free parenting courses that encourage rather than blame {#54}

a place that a parent can go and feel no threat or blame, and find the help they need {#57}

Give them a step by step approach to their problem. Then give them assignments. Someone needs to follow-up, and help them thru the process, or until they are out of immediate trouble. {#80}

free parenting courses that teach specific skills that parents can readily use, and helping parents address their part of the problem (stressed, despondent, resentful...), what factors can the parents control that may sabotage success {#82}

3. Help families learn that they are not alone

This could be done by making available a parent support group that deals with specific issues such as domestic violence where the parent is the victim, juveniles that are addicted, and juveniles that are out of control of their lives.. {#81}

Start parenting support groups early, during pregnancy, and have them address "normal" parenting issues so that parents learn to trust and recognize that these groups are a valuable resource to them, especially when difficulties arise. This would also serve as a preventative measure to help parents in providing the child with greater advantage during the all-important formative years. {#118}

4. Help families find practical things to do now - short term fixes

identify proven resources to use for specific problems {#31}

help families identify what is realisitic to address with short term fix {#34}

focus on changing specific behavior changes instead of holistic changes {#39}

provide specific information on how parents can take care of themselves (stress, anger, etc.) {#42}

teach parents specific skills and techniques addressing the type of problems they are facing (drugs, violence, truancy, stealing, gangs, etc.) {#48}

provide criteria to decide if the problem is severe enough that they need to seek outside help {#50}

provide a mentoring program of parents that have had children with behavior problems, to help parents presently having problems with their kids. Ideally pairing parents with experience in similar situations {#56}

good idea, pairing parents with similar situations {#63}

A parent support group could help with pairing parents with one another. Both parents can be given a step by step approach to dealing with their problem. They can use each other as support thru this process. {#84}

5. Help families learn what real communication between parent and child is

Parents and children should develope real communication skills. We need to talk to each other and not at each other. This can only happen when parents become interested in relationship building with their child instead of adding things to their lives. {#38}

Try to make parents aware that money, cars, houses, ect, is not the most important in life.

Better to spend time, as in meals, together with the whole family.

This creates the time for communication each and every day, and one can identify a problem early. {#46}

provide practical training in communication skills for parents and children, even if only the parents are motivated to use these skills {#59}

prepare parents and kids for known potential pitfalls when trying to communicate (how to ensure you will be able to stay on topic and avoid reacting to overt or subtle provocation) {#66}

make sure that parents AND the kids know how this will personally benefit them {#67}

teach kids how to negotiate for what they want (using good communication skills) rather than trying to use force or intimidation {#70}

Have a free mediation program available and manatory for parents and children who are having repetitive problems {#71}

6. Making help easy to get

Develope a community directory of all agencies that are available for family services {#23}

One central point of info available at no cost to the parents. {#26}

provide the help or find the help for the parent, taking some of the frustration and fear off of the parent {#68}

Again, one central location which has all the information available on everything that is offered in our area. One stop shopping. Then the parent does not have to make 50 different phone calls, just to have to door slamed in their face {#89}

7. Making help easy to find

tv and radio ads {#14}

Advertise all the time in the newspaper. {#15}

Same location each time {#16}

community agency cooperation {#17}

yellow pages {#18}

pta's {#20}

tell ministers about it {#21}

churches/youth groups {#22}

A central agency needs to be a clearinghouse for all local information related to parents and teens {#24}

local news coverage {#27}

Have a centrally located building , staffed full time, the parent could take their child any time, no matter what the problem, the staff would would help the parent figure out what could be done to help {#37}

a mailing list and money would be helpful in getting information to parents in a personalized way {#122}

8. Making help easy to give (sharing by families that have been through such problems)

Have parents as well as teens who have experienced these difficulties talk about their experiences and how they successfully came through the experience with the parents and teens who are currently in difficulty. {#123}

9. Finding other empathetic people

Parents who have already been throught a difficult situation with their child need to always be available to talk with parents going thru the problem now. Parents need to know that they are not the only one going thru a difficult situation with their child. And there is light at the end of the tunnel. {#52}

Parents need to know that they are not alone. Other families go through tough times with their children. {#88}

10. Helping families get awareness that problems can be fixed whether or not they have money or insurance

We must have agencies available who will can give immediate help regardless of a parents financial status. A clearinghouse list of agencies needs to be available to all police officers, and agencies of what is available, and how much it cost. {#58}

11. Helping families get help before their kids are arrested

Parents need options to get help for their child before the police get involved {#29}

A central agency needs to be established to guide parents to the proper place for help for their child's problem {#33}

All agencies need to work together for the best interest of the child and the parent {#36}

help should be available 24 hrs. a day, a place that the child could be taken anytime, someone to talk with the parent at anytime {#73}

sometimes it seems that the agencies involved working with a child does not have the time or they don't express any interest in what the other agency is trying to say or do. {#111}

parents usually know that their child has a problem, but finding the help and affording the help are roadblocks {#112}

12. How to get families/parents/children to participate

We have to stop pointing fingers at the parent. Parents already feel guilt. If agencies point the finger to tell them what they have done wrong the will feel worse, rather than better {#43}

Assuming a mailing list of parents who are or who have experienced behavioral problems with their children, we should create a newsletter to keep them informed of issues, events, and activities such as this one. If they read about it in a newsletter that goes to other people who understand their pain, they might be more inclined to get involved. {#78}

focus on the families that are most likely to be willing to participate, rather than convincing families that they need to participate. Find families in crisis RIGHT NOW and engage them immediately {#90}

13. How to identify families who have recently been there

Create a database of parents who are currently experiencing problems. They will soon be beyond it in some fashion. Then they could be asked if they will be willing to share their experience after the fact. {#35}

I agree, We need a list of parents who are willing to share their experiences, and willing to talk with other parents. {#62}

identify where families end up when they are in crisis and build a cooperative relationship with these agencies or institutions (probation officers, drug rehab, adolescent psych ward, school counselors ) {#87}

14. How to improve our ability to deal with existing agencies & programs - developing political savvy

Get to know about the program.

Find out how we can benefit the program.

Develop relationships with those involved in the program. {#69}

Get acquainted with the people responsible for the other programs. Learn about their success stories and applaud them. Offer to help or at least express interest in their programs (if sincere). It will be much easier to neutralize their opposition to new programs if they know the people involved as well {#85}

15. -----------------------------------------------------------

16. Giving too much information too early

listen carefully to discern what the family is asking for or needing, and address this first rather than addressing what we perceive to be the need/problem prematurely {#109}

do not address too many possiblities at one time. Move from the immediate to more future oriented possibilities {#110}

17. Offering help (advice) that is percieved as un-needed or is un-wanted

Make intentional effort, and use specific guidelines to assure that we are understanding what is needed or wanted, AND that we ensure that they see that we understand what they need/want {#113}

involve the parents/family in the process, rather than "taking over" because we have been down this road before (beware of overwhelming those seeking help) {#114}

18. Hooks in packaging (Parent Camp) - Hooks in programs (Parenting Class)

use language that communicates proactive and empowering actions in naming and describing such programs {#115}

The way you approach the program to a parent or child will help in the process of selling the idea to them. Make the approach a POSITIVE one. {#116}

collaborate with people that have been through such programs (or are good candidates for these programs) to determine what the genuine interests and needs are that can be met {#117}

accentuate how such programs will give them greater control and improve their quality of life {#119}

19. Need for better advertising/publicity

identify places and people that families seek out or engage when in crisis and advertise there. These people and agencies could actively facilitate engaging the family. {#120}

make sure to connect help/aid groups with pro-social, positive activities that the public will appreciate (Panoply, Neverland, etc) {#121}

20. Need for easily accessible location

21. Networking - People to People - People helping People

22. -----------------------------------------------------------

23. If we had unlimited resources to develop any of these programs, or fix any of these problems what would we do?

HERE'S THE LIST OF TOPICS FROM PREVIOUS CARDS.

PICK THE TOPIC THAT YOU WOULD WORK ON FIRST AND TELL WHAT YOU WOULD DO IF YOU HAD UNLIMITED RESOURCES {#40}

Help families get out of crises

Help families get on the right track

Help families learn that they are not alone

Help families find practical things to do now - short term fixes

Help families learn what real communication between parent and child is {#28}

Making help easy to get

Making help easy to find

Making help easy to give

Helping families get help before their kids are arrested {#30}

How to get families/parents/children to participate

How to identify families who have recently been there

How to improve our ability to deal with existing agencies & programs - developing political savvy {#32}

------------------------------------------------------------------- {#55}

1. Provide training on anger management

2. Attempt to instill confidence in the parent and child so that they would not be afraid to discuss whatever problems. This again would be accomplished through training and work groups. {#51}

Establish a youth crisis center, staffed full time to provide the help and guidance needed to any parent and/or child - one stop shopping sort of {#83}

That center would have a hot line, staffed all the time, if someone needed to go out to the home, there will be someone there to help {#91}

24. Other comments and observations

Get the media to shine the spotlight on the accomplishments (and the failures) of existing agencies. Make the public aware of where the money is going. {#47}

Need to publish "early warning signs" of serious behavioral problems. Also, need to promote need for parents to maintain daily contact with their children so they (the parents) will at least have the opportunity to observe potential behavioral problems before they get out of hand. {#60}

To be successful in providing training to parents with troubled children it is going to be very important that we identify all community agencies that already have programs. We will need to see how we can work with them. If for some reason we cannot work together we need to just do what needs to be done! {#65}

25. Notes from verbal discussion

WHY PARENTS DID NOT PARTICIPATE:

1) Parents feel embarrassed - "I'm a failure"

2) Parents' fear of leaving child while engaged in this activity

3) Parents too busy working or being consumers

4) Parents were in denial - there's no problem

5) Parents blame someone/something else - the school, teachers {#64}

WHY PEOPLE DID NOT PARTICIPATE:

1) We did not do a good job on publicity - newspaper article was not an attention getter

2) Location was hard to find

3) It has always been a struggle to get parents {#74}

Had good attendance at 1st meeting of Community Partnership for Youth - over 100 participants. Came immediately after the Franklin crisis some 2 1/2 years ago {#79}

WHAT COULD WE DO TO CHANGE PARENTS BEHAVIOR AND PERCEPTION ABOUT PARTICIPATING?:

1) Help them see how to improve their quality of life

2) Help them find better ways to change their children's behavior

3) Help them get more control of their children

4) Help improve confidence of parents - parenting skills improvement

5) Help parents find quick fixes - things that are immediately applicable and help in the short run

6) Help parents understand that this is something that has to be worked on {#86}

Funds are going to agencies / programs that are not producing results {#92}

People say that they are supportive of our efforts until they bump into the fringes of what they are supposed to do {#93}

Agencies / programs are protecting their turf {#94}
